Why Benefits Realisation Matters

From delivering things to making a difference

A project can finish on time and still miss the improvement people wanted. Why does that happen? And what can we do about it?

This free course explains the difference between delivering something and making a useful difference. You’ll see why people, feedback and evidence matter, and how to keep things simple when the work is small.

A starting point for anyone involved in change

You don’t need to work in project management or know anything about benefits realisation. This course is for people in businesses, charities and public services who want to understand why an improvement matters, not just whether a project is complete.

  • People working in teams affected by change

  • Sponsors, business leaders and service managers

  • Project, programme and portfolio teams, including PMOs

  • Strategy, finance and operational colleagues

  • Anyone asked to help define, measure or explain a benefit

Look beyond the finished project

  • Why completing a project doesn’t automatically mean it was valuable

  • What outputs, outcomes, benefits and value mean in everyday language

  • How to understand what different people value, including possible downsides

  • Why it matters to check whether needs have changed

  • How early feedback and useful evidence can lead to better choices

  • What people in different roles can contribute

  • When a quick conversation is enough and when more structure helps

  • Five questions you can use in your next discussion

Nine short lessons, three chapters

Chapter 1 — Why should we care?

Lesson 1 — A finished project isn’t the whole story

Lesson 2 — Outputs, outcomes, benefits and value

Lesson 3 — Value for whom?

Chapter 2 — Why keep paying attention?

Lesson 4 — Things change. So can the value.

Lesson 5 — Find out while you can still change course

Lesson 6 — Evidence isn’t just for reporting

Chapter 3 — What does this mean for me?

Lesson 7 — Why should someone in my role care?

Lesson 8 — How much benefits realisation do you really need?

Lesson 9 — Five questions that change the conversation

Useful questions to take away

The free course includes:

  • Five Questions About Value: a printable card for better conversations

  • Why Should I Care?: a role-based guide for explaining the point to colleagues

  • My Next Small Step: a one-page action sheet to apply what you’ve learned

The project was finished. But was it still needed?

One lesson includes an anonymised experience of a project that took about three years. During that time, the organisation changed and a key sponsor left. By the time the team delivered its new capability, the intended users had bought another solution. The in-house capability was never used.

The lesson isn’t about blaming the delivery team or claiming that a different process would definitely have stopped the project. It’s about asking whether the need is still there, talking to the people affected and using that information while there’s still time to make a choice.
